Pumping Molten Sulphur
This application note provides an overview of the successful use of magnetically coupled gear pumps to meter and manufacture sulphur derivatives used in the manufacture of surfactants.
A global manufacturer of specialty and intermediate chemicals that are used in a number of consumer products and industrial applications uses surfactants as the primary ingredient responsible for the foaming and cleaning qualities of its cleaning compounds, detergents, shampoos, lotions, toothpaste and cosmetics.
Molten sulphur is used to produce the sulphur derivatives used to make surfactants. A robust and reliable pump is needed to feed molten sulphur from storage tanks to provide a flooded suction. Molten sulphur solidifies below relatively high ambient temperatures and it increases in viscosity above the optimum pumping temperature.
