Types of Chemical Pumps We Supply

Magnetic Drive Sealless Pumps

sealless chemical pumps

Magnetic Drive (mag-drive) Pumps use a magnetic coupling to link the motor to the pump impeller or gears and so have no mechanical seal. They are thus hermetically sealed and offer very safe fluid transfer in various applications.

• Zero-leakage design for hazardous liquids
• Ideal for acids, solvents, and toxic chemicals
• Minimal maintenance, long operational life
• View Mag-Drive Pumps

Jason Downing (Sales Director at Michael Smith Engineers) has two decades of experience in specifying mag-drive pumps for wide range of challenging and hazardous applications “Magnetically coupled pumps are almost always the best solution for pumping applications that involve a liquid that would be dangerous if it leaked or was exposed to air. This can include toxic chemicals such as ….., flammable liquids such as solvents, or even chemical such as isocyanate that can solidify when exposed to air.”

Air Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) Pumps

AODD pumps for chemical transfer

AODD pumps are air-operated double diaphragm pumps that use compressed air to move a wide range of liquids and slurries. They are positive displacement pumps that work by using two flexible diaphragms that move back and forth to create suction and discharge pressure. This design makes them versatile, durable, and able to operate dry without damage.

• Self-priming and capable of handling solids
• Suitable for drums, totes, and aggressive chemical streams
• Reliable for corrosive and abrasive media
• View AODD Pumps

Sales Engineer Stuart Willgoss has been with Michael Smith Engineers for over twenty years and is an expert in AODD pumps. "A huge benefit of AODD pumps is their simple design and ease of operation. For basic chemical transfer applications such as decanting from a large container they offer a low maintenance and cost effective option"

Centrifugal Chemical Transfer Pumps

• High-flow pumps for bulk liquid transfer
• Available in metallic and non-metallic construction
• Suitable for tank farms and industrial pipelines
• View Centrifugal Pumps

Metering & Dosing Pumps

• Accurate, pulseless dosing for chemical injection
• Ideal for pH control, process dosing, and CIP/SIP applications
• View Dosing Pumps

Drum & Container Pumps

• Lightweight and easy to deploy
• Constructed in PP, PVDF, and stainless steel
• Suitable for safe decanting of aggressive chemicals

Pumps for Specific Chemical Groups

It should be noted that materials suitable for one type of chemical may be totally unsuitable for another. For example, stainless steel is resistant to nitric acid, but not to Sulphuric Acid.

Acid Transfer Pumps

• Handle HCl, Hâ‚‚SOâ‚„, nitric and phosphoric acids
• Available in corrosion-resistant materials

Alkali / Caustic Pumps

• Suitable for NaOH, KOH, and other caustic solutions
• Durable material options for long-term use

Solvent Handling Pumps

• For hydrocarbons, ketones, aromatics, and other solvents
• ATEX-rated options available for flammable liquids

Corrosive & Hazardous Fluid Pumps

• Ideal for toxic, flammable, and explosive media
• Compliance with ATEX hazardous area requirements

High-Purity & CIP/SIP Compatible Pumps

• For pharmaceutical, biotech, and semiconductor processes
• Designed for clean-in-place (CIP) and sterilize-in-place (SIP) systems

How to Select the Right Chemical Pump

When selecting a pump for chemicals it is crucial to ensure all 'wetted parts' (those in contact with the fluid, including seals and O-rings) are compatible with the specific chemical to prevent corrosion, swelling, or dissolution.

Choosing the correct chemical pump requires careful consideration of:

• Chemical type & corrosivity
• Temperature & pressure conditions
• Flow and head requirements
• Material compatibility
• Hazardous area compliance (ATEX)
• Maintenance and lifecycle cost

We provide expert guidance and can help you complete a pump selection checklist to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation.
