Sealless magnetically driven pumps for green hydrogen generation

The UK’s green hydrogen sector is growing rapidly - and Michael Smith Engineers is proud to be supporting that momentum. For many years, we’ve supplied a wide range of pumps for green hydrogen generation, from circulating de-ionised water in Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysers to handling caustic solutions in Alkaline Water Electrolysis (AWE) systems.

Our go-to choices for these demanding applications are often the DB-series and UC-series from Finish Thompson. Not only do these ranges offer reliability, efficiency, and a sealless magnetic drive design; but they also provide non-metallic wetted construction to remove the threat of leeching into process that can occur with metallic pumps.

Last week highlighted this perfectly, with two separate pump deliveries for major UK green hydrogen projects:

PEM Electrolyser Application
We supplied a sealless, magnetically coupled UCR438 centrifugal pump, close-coupled to a 37 kW, 2-pole motor, delivering up to 164 m³/hr. The UCR series provides enhanced performance as a direct upgrade to the highly respected UC range.

Finish Thompson magnetically driven pump model UCR438DOCSSVS78720 with 4" x 3" ANSI 150# flange connections close coupled to 37 kW, 2 pole, 400 volt, 3 phase, 50 Hz, IP55 motor with thermistors and anticondensation heaters.

AWE Electrolyser Application
For circulating a KOH solution, we delivered a UCP1518 magnetically coupled pump, fitted with a 7.5 kW, 2-pole motor, achieving 300 LPM at a 30-metre head.
