Sam Smith BSc (Hons) - Managing Director
Product specialist for: Everything!
Being the son of the company’s founder, it is no surprise that Sam is the longest serving member of the team, having joined the company in 1986. You are unlikely to see Sam’s name on quotes, but he still plays a very active role behind the scenes and holds a vast repository of pump knowledge.
Sam has a keen interest in rural affairs and travel to more remote areas of the globe.
Jason Downing BEng (Hons), MSc - Sales Director
Product specialist for: Everything
Jason joined our Yorkshire office in 2011 as an Internal Sales Engineer, before branching out into External Sales and took on the role of Sales Director in 2018. Jason splits his time between our Cleckheaton and Woking offices and runs our Quality Management System ISO 9001:2015. Jason is mainly involved with larger technical projects and has extensive experience working on applications for API pumps, Storage Terminals, Refrigeration, Hydrogen (Proton Exchange Membrane and Alkaline Water Electrolysis), Oil & Gas (offshore and coastal), and Aircraft Refuelling.

Jamie Lane - Operations Director
Product specialist for: Motors, control systems, and ancillary equipment
Prior to joining us in 2019, Jamie spent over seven years with another leading UK based pump company and has vast experience across a wide range of pumps and pumping systems. A qualified electrician, he is an expert in mechanical and electrical equipment and supports their optimum operation, including motors, baseplates, mechanical couplings, and associated equipment. Jamie is responsible for Operations at our Woking Head Office and manages major projects post-order. He is also the company’s Health & Safety Leader.

Joshua Adamson BA (Hons) - Business Development Manager
Product specialist for: Viking Pump, Viking Pump Hygienic, SAWA, Bornemann, GEA Hilge, Ampco
Josh joined the team in 2024 with vast pump industry experience having worked for pump manufacturers and distributors previously. He has full sales responsibility for our hygienic pump portfolio and specialises in biopharma, bakeries, breweries, dairy product handling, and drug development applications. Josh also leads sales for our Viking Pump range, often dealing with hot oil, polyurethane foam and crude oil requirements.

David Todd BA (Hons) - Business Development
Product specialist for: Industrial, AODD and drum pumps.
David has over 20 years’ experience in pumps and fluid control systems. This ranges from precision dosing applications to chemical transfer to contaminated liquid waste management. David’s current role is mainly involved with technical application management and keeping customers updated on the latest developments from our principals.

Roberto Mori - Applications & Production Manager
Product specialist for: HNPM, Micropump, Wanner, Codip
Roberto joined us only in 2018 originally in an Internal Sales role. However, his technical ability is such that he is now one of our leading applications engineers. Comfortable bridging the gap between engineering, production, sales and the customer to ensure technically sound and practical solutions. He also covers Sales Visits in the South of England, and site commissioning across the UK.

When not solving pump problems, he can usually be found educating people on what should—and absolutely should not—go on a pizza. Roberto's other passion is mechanics: if it has an engine, gears, bearings or moving parts, he’ll probably want to take it apart.
Stephanie Downing BSc (Hons) - Technical Sales Engineer
Product specialist for: Finish Thompson, Dickow
After graduating from the University of Manchester with a degree in chemistry, Steph put her education to good use in the both the metals and environmental industries. After taking a break to start a family she joined Michael Smith Engineers to work specifically on chemical and fuel transfer applications. She often takes care of projects involving Jet Fuel transfer, Anodising & Galvanising (Surface Treatment), and Bulk Chemical loading and unloading.

Stuart Willgoss - Technical Sales Engineer
Product specialist for: Viking Pump, Liquiflo, Finish Thompson
When Stuart joined Michael Smith Engineers in 2004, he probably had no idea that two decades later he would be one of our most experienced sales engineers. After starting with us, Stuart quickly became a product specialist for the FTI range of drum pumps. When we took on the distributorship of Viking Pump in 2007, Stuart soon developed an extensive knowledge of their industrial gear pumps and coupled with his knowledge of our Liquiflo Pump range, he became our internal go-to for gear pump applications. Over the years he has worked on many applications, but typical requests come from the polyurethane foam (isocyanate & polyol), paint and bitumen industries.

Craig Bolling - Technical Sales Engineer
Product specialist for: Hygienic Pumps and Wanner
Craig has over 35 years' experience in pump engineering, working with many of the UK's leading pump manufacturers before joining Michael Smith Engineers. His expertise includes positive displacement pumps, sealless magnetic drive pumps and challenging applications within the food & beverage, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, distilling and oil & gas industries. Based in Glasgow, he also conducts site visits in Scotland and Northern England.
