Pumps for pharmaceutical, biotech and life sciences

Michael Smith Engineers has extensive experience in the supply of hygienic, sanitary, and aseptic pumps to the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. Whether your field is API production, cosmetics, or flow chemistry, we can assist you in finding the perfect solution for your pumping needs.

  • Hygienic Lobe pumps for viscous liquids such as creams and gels.
  • Hygienic centrifugal pumps for sterile water, vaccines or protein solutions
  • High pressure diaphragm pumps for metering or dosing applications
  • Micro-annular gear pumps for flow chemistry processes.
  • FDA compliant AODD pumps for emulsions and other liquids
  • Corrosion resistant, non-leaching gear pumps for pharmacutical metering and dosing appliacations.

The Viking rotary lobe and circumferential piston pumps are ideal for handling highly viscous liquids such as antibiotic creams, ointments, sunscreens and lotions. The handing of medications requires the highest levels of hygiene capability in a pump. These applications require purity, accurcy and cleanability and pumps that can be sterilised in place. All Viking Pump Hygienic models are certified to 3A as standard.

EHEDG, 3A, or FDA required? No problem with our range of SAWA hygienic pumps. Available electropolished to surface finishes with RA <0.4 microns, and fully drainable, SAWA’s centrifugal pumps, peripheral pumps, and side channel pumps are ideal for efficient medium and high-volume transfer of low viscosity liquids such as ultrapure water, perfumes and alcohols.

The range is constructed from high-quality chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel 1.4435/316L, and includes CIP and SIP compliant units, dead space-free designs, and low noise operation.

Michael Smith Engineers’ pharmaceutical range also includes several positive displacement pump options.

Wanner Hydra-Cell diaphragm pumps are ideal for applications involving higher discharge pressures such as spray coating and filtration duties including reverse osmosis, nano-filtration and ultra-filtration. Available with tri-clamp hygienic connections, FDA diaphragms, and internal components polished to RA <0.4 microns, Wanner Hydra-Cell pumps meet most pharmaceutical design requirements.

Their compact size saves on installation floorspace, and their seal-less design (no dynamic seals in contact with the process liquid) ensures reduced maintenance down-time and a safer work environment.

Other typical applications for Wanner Hydra-Cell pumps include HPLC (High Pressure Liquid Chromatography), pilot plant process development, and metering & dosing into waste streams.

HNPM micro-annular gear pumps dose small amounts of liquids fast and accurately with virtually no pulsations, making them ideal for Flow Chemistry and low-flow pharmaceutical applications. They are available in a range of construction materials to ensure full compatibility with even the harshest chemistries and offer highly precise liquid transfer (precision coefficient of variation CV < 1%) at volumetric flow rates up to 1.1 l/min. HNPM pumps are also available hermetically sealed with a magnetic coupling for improved plant safety, and reduced maintenance.

Widely used in API development, HNPM also offers the Modular Dosing System MoDoS, a tailor-made pump system for continuous production process in fine chemical and pharmaceutical production. In its simplest form, this includes filter, pump, check valve and Coriolis flow meter all skid mounted and ready for use. MoDoS is a complete solution for process-safe pumping in the low-volume range, suitable for vaccines, APIs, acids, alkalis, catalysts, ammonia and much more.

FTI Air FDA-compliant metallic and non-metallic air operated double diaphragm (AODD) pumps are constructed from materials safe for pharmaceutical processes where EHEDG and 3A are not required. Available with tri-clamp connections, they are ideal for handling emulsions and viscous liquids. FTI AODD pump FDA
Liquiflo external gear pumps are available in variety of corrosion-resistant and wear-resistant internal materials and can be used in pharmaceutical metering, circulation and injection applications which demand non-leeching materials and hygienic tri-clamp connections. Common uses include sub-150 l/min transfers of dyes, solvents, and DI water. Liquiflo pump
