Efficient Bitumen Transfer with Viking Internal Gear Pumps

Internal gear pumps really shine when it comes to bitumen transfer and are our recommended solution for such applications.

For gear pumps, wear rate is proportional to the square of running speed, so whilst competitors may offer bitumen solutions running at 950 rpm or 1450 rpm, these do not provide the longevity or reliability offered by a Viking internal gear pump running at sub 500 rpm.

External gear pumps can also be considered for bitumen applications, but they lose their volumetric efficiency quicker than internal gear pumps. This is because when external gear pumps experience wear, the gear-casing tolerance increases, resulting in decreased volumetric efficiency through increased slippage, and eventually failure.

This project required a robust solution to transfer bitumen at temperatures up to 190°C. Our solution was the 124A universal seal series of internal gear pumps from Viking Pump.

These H124A pumps are coupled to geared motors providing an output speed of circa 450 rpm, delivering a flow rate of approximately 200 kg/hr at 8.5 bar differential pressure.

Slow wear rate thanks to the low operating speed, efficient transfer, reliable solution.
